10 items for RV travel that are worth the expense

Hitting the open road in your RV is an adventure like no other and having the right gear can make all the difference. From practical items to those that add a touch of luxury, these items for RV travel and camping are worth the expense.
Are you worried about running out of power while you’re off-grid? Or just want to ensure you’ve got enough power to remain comfortable? A generator is a solid investment for solving this problem, and the good news is, modern generators are no longer as loud as they used be. Well, this one isn’t.
We love the Yamaha EF2200iS Inverter Generator. With the backing of a trusted brand, this EF2200iS is the perfect blend of power (2200 watts), whilst still being compact enough to be portable. The 4.7L fuel capacity gives you around 10 hours of run time on eco-mode, and it also has a boost mode for when you need that little bit of extra grunt.
Like all good inverter generators, this one has a stack of power outlets.
The Aussie-made GoBlock by REDARC is a portable dual battery system that is suitable and practical for any vehicle. With USB, Accessory, Merit, Engel/Fridge and Anderson outputs, use it to power your fridge, charge your smart devices, phones, camera, power lights, run your CPAP machine and more.
As an all-in-one solution, the GoBlock has no exposed components or fans, which means you can take it from your RV or tow car to the beach, worksite, campsite or family BBQ without worrying about water, dirt and dust.
This is not your standard 12V battery box though. It features the latest lithium cell technology and allows for more charge cycles than other portable power stations on the market. Charging options are flexible, ranging from 7.5amp AC mains to pre-charge it before you leave the house to a cigarette socket trickle charge to 50A input from power sources via an Anderson plug, including solar.
For those of you towing your RV, you can’t beat a good quality set of drawers for your tow vehicle. With galvanised steel frame and doors, UV-stabilised industrial carpet, stainless steel runners, and lockable slam latch handles, you can’t go past 4WD Interiors, who’ve been producing durable and reliable drawer systems for vehicles for over 30 years. So basically, in terms of getting it right, they know what they’re doing.
A drawer system for your vehicle is the easiest way to neatly store things and access them when you need them. It goes without saying that this is also extremely useful when you’re not towing an RV as well.
Are all those different keys for your caravan doing your head in? It was doing Dave and Jamie’s head in too, the husband and wife team behind 1 Key Caravan. A locksmith since 1998, when Dave and Jamie bought their first caravan, the first thing Dave wanted to do was ensure all the locks and hatches worked off the one key. After his two decades of being a locksmith, he already knew this was something others were wanting, so a new solution was created with 1 Key Caravan.
1 Key Caravan does exactly what it sounds like it does, turn your multiple keys into one key that operates all compatible hatches and doors on your RV. Your RV is your second home, or for some, your actual home, so it’s a no-brainer to have the one key for everything.
Not many RVs come with a mattress that’s perfect right off the bat. Rather than replace your whole mattress though, grab yourself a quality removable mattress topper. We love Aussie Wool Comfort as they’re 100% Australian-made and contain 100% pure allergy-free wool.
It goes right on top of your regular mattress and has elasticated fixtures to keep it in place. Combine this with a fitted sheet, and it’s not going anywhere. It’s not uncommon for RVs to have an odd shape or non-standard size mattress but Aussie Wool Comfort can make custom sizes to order.
Not all RVs come with air conditioning or have a hard roof for installation, and a lot of the time, you only need it for a few months of the year. This is where a portable air conditioner comes in handy.
We love the Ecoflow Wave 2 portable air conditioner. Being portable, you can use it anywhere and it also heats, making it useful in colder weather.
You can run the Ecoflow Wave 2 off 240V mains power, but it can also run off a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that slots onto the bottom of the unit. This optional add-on battery will run the unit for up to eight hours on a single charge, with multiple charging options available.
An electric bike (ebike) is super handy when you’re travelling in an RV. It means you can set up your RV, roll your awning out, and still have transport to get around without having to pack everything up to drive to the shops.
Storing your ebike on a carrier at the back of your RV or tow vehicle can be a bit of a security risk at the campsite though. A folding ebike solves this solution. It’s the same as a regular ebike, but it folds down to a smaller size for ease of storage inside your RV while you’re not at the campsite or are travelling.
We like the Aventon Sinch2 folding ebike but if you’d like to learn more about what to consider when buying a folding ebike, read our guide below:
There’s not much worse than getting traveller’s diarrhea because you’ve unknowingly filled up your RV tanks with contaminated water on the road. The simple solution to this is a water filtration and purification system.
Thirsty Nomad offer a scientifically proven solution that requires no chemicals or power. Lightweight at just 590 grams, it removes 10 heavy metals from the water (including lead, Fluoride, Arsenic III and Arsenic V). It also meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for E-Coli and 99.9% of bacteria and viruses are killed upon contact.
As an RV traveller, you’ll often find yourself camping by the beach enjoying the water, sun and sand. But carting water toys around is a bit of a problem when space is limited, right? I’m happy to say this statement is now wrong, enter Paddle Equipment’s blow-up Stand Up Paddle Boards.
No more wrestling with getting your board up on your roof rack, as once it’s deflated, it will fit in the tunnel boot of your RV or in the back of your vehicle.
You can get blow-up SUPs from numerous places now but read our article below about why we particularly like this one from Red Equipment.
Everyone loves a hammock, but a Nakie Hammock is a cut above the rest. They’re super easy to set up and adjust and are made from recycled plastic. Despite this, they’re quite soft and comfortable still. The big winner here though, is how small they squoosh back down to, and you don’t have to wrestle it to get it back in the bag.
