And it’s going to shake up the ute segment
The Australian 4X4 ute scene is growing by another model in 2018, with Mercedes-Benz bringing out the X-Class ute. It’s based on Nissan’s Navara, but will bring some significant changes to justify its existence.

Lower-spec models will use the same engine, gearbox and driveline as the Navara: a 2.3-litre diesel with either one or two turbochargers (120/140kW, 403/450Nm), which run through a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox respectively.
High-spec X-Class utes will have a Mercedes driveline, with a 190kW, 550Nm V6 diesel set to take Amarok’s claim to most powerful ute. This will go through Mercedes’ own seven-speed gearbox, using a full-time 4WD set-up.
The interior will be all new, as will the suspension tune. And of course, the prices will be different. Prices aren’t confirmed yet, but Mercedes will have to stay competitive to make a dent in this segment.
