Front Runner Slimline 3: A new roof rack for your touring setup

Front Runner’s new Slimline 3 roof rack brings movable slats, a lower profile and tidier wiring to your touring setup. Here’s what’s new.

Packing for a trip doesn’t always finish at the caravan or camper trailer door. Camp chairs, recovery gear and the toys for a day out can quickly fill the tow vehicle, particularly when the whole family is coming along.

Dometic’s new Front Runner Slimline 3 roof rack aims to make organising that extra gear easier, with adjustable slats, a lower profile and built-in features for securing loads and routing wiring.

The first product released under the Dometic Front Runner Series banner, the Slimline 3 introduces a substantial redesign of the familiar Slimline platform.

Change the rack to suit the trip

One of the Slimline 3’s biggest changes is the ability to add, remove or reposition individual slats without dismantling the entire rack. The spacing between slats can also be adjusted, allowing owners to configure the platform around their equipment.

Dual T-slots provide more options for positioning accessories, while Dometic says the rack remains compatible with all its existing top-mount rack accessories. There are also accessories developed specifically for the Slimline 3.

For existing Front Runner owners, that compatibility will make an upgrade simpler, although it’s worth checking the mounting requirements for each accessory before transferring your setup.

A lower profile and easier loading

For anyone who regularly loads and unloads their tow vehicle, these practical changes will be of appeal.

The loading surface is flat, without a raised perimeter lip. This should make it easier to slide bulky items onto the platform and position them where you need them.

There are also integrated tie-down points in all four corners, providing attachment points for securing straps without needing to fit separate corner tie-down hardware.

In addition, Dometic says the Slimline 3 has a 20 per cent lower profile than the Slimline II, with the design intended to reduce wind resistance and noise.

Tidier wiring for touring accessories

Roof-mounted lights and powered accessories can leave you with cables to route around brackets and rails. The Slimline 3 incorporates concealed wiring channels within its perimeter profiles, along with corner pass-throughs and breakout tabs.

These provide a neater route for wiring associated with lights, solar panels and other electrical accessories.

Dometic has also introduced an easy-release mounting system designed to let owners remove and reinstall the rack without disturbing the vehicle’s roof seal. That’s pretty handy for those who only want to use the rack for holidays and would prefer to remove it between trips.

Redesigned construction

Dometic claims a redesigned construction with heat-treated alloys and a redesigned slat profile that results in 40 per cent greater strength before permanent deformation and a 70 per cent increase in stiffness.

Sheet-metal components use high-strength 3CR12 stainless steel, paired with black-coated stainless-steel fasteners for corrosion resistance.

Those strength claims don’t mean you can automatically carry more on your vehicle’s roof. Your usable allowance still depends on your vehicle’s roof loading limits.

Vehicle fitment and Australian pricing

The launch announcement lists fitments for several familiar Australian tow vehicles, including the Ford Ranger Double Cab and Ranger Super Duty, Toyota HiLux Double Cab, Prado 250, Isuzu D-MAX, Mazda BT-50 and Volkswagen Amarok.

Other announced applications include the Suzuki Jimny three-door, INEOS Grenadier and Lexus GX 550, alongside overseas-market models such as the Toyota 4Runner and Ford Bronco.

Dometic’s Australian website currently lists the following example kit prices:
