Jayco launches new JPod XC mini caravan

Jayco’s new JPod XC sleeps two and packs an outdoor kitchen, 270° awning, air conditioning and 200Ah lithium power. Here’s what’s included.

Jayco has launched the new JPod XC and although it’s certainly compact in size, the word Pod doesn’t do it justice as you can actually stand up in this one. ‘Mini caravan’ would probably be a more apt name.

The bigger addition to the JPod line-up sleeps two adults and is aimed at couples and solo travellers who want a few comforts inside, but still prefer to do most of their camping outdoors.

You get an external kitchen, a 270° batwing awning, under-bunk air conditioning and a power setup that includes a 200Ah lithium battery and two 260W solar panels.

The price? Jayco wants you to request a quote.

Yes, I find that annoying too. Why not give us a starting figure so we know whether we’re even in the same ballpark? Caravan Camping Sales’ coverage of Melbourne Leisurefest put it at around $47,000, based on information from a salesperson at the show. But as of yet, Jayco hasn’t published a price on its launch page and it’s unclear whether that reported figure includes on-road costs.

Cook outside under the awning

The JPod XC keeps the cooking outside, with an external kitchen featuring a two-burner gas cooktop and a rectangular gunmetal sink.

I’m really pleased they kept the cooking outdoors because it’s really hard trying to squeze past your travelling companion in a small indoor kitchen. Of course, outdoor cooking is more appealing on a pleasant evening than when the rain is coming in sideways.

The 270° batwing awning provides sheltered space around the camper for meals, camp chairs and an afternoon spent doing very little. There’s also a picnic table with storage and an external gas bayonet.

Up front, Jayco lists a large storage compartment for your camping gear, along with a jerry can holder and a single 9kg gas bottle.

Standing room and a few comforts inside

Standing room is a welcome part of the XC’s bigger layout. Being able to get dressed without an awkward shuffle will appeal to plenty of travellers, although Jayco hasn’t published an internal headroom measurement.

The camper sleeps two adults and comes with an innerspring mattress, under-bunk air conditioning and a 12V fan. An upright 12V fridge keeps food and drinks inside, while leatherette seating gives you somewhere to sit when you’ve had enough of the camp chair.

A Projecta control panel and portable Bluetooth speaker are also on the equipment list.

For couples moving on from a tent, or anyone looking to downsize their camping setup, there’s a fair bit to like here. You’ve got a bed and somewhere to retreat indoors, while the kitchen and awning keep you connected to the outdoor side of camping.

Lithium power and rooftop solar

Jayco has fitted the JPod XC with a 200Ah lithium battery and two 260W twin-cell solar panels. That’s 520W of rooftop solar to top up the battery when the sun cooperates.

There’s also a Projecta PM535 power system with a 30A DC/DC charger, allowing charging from a compatible tow vehicle setup while you’re on the move.

For running the fridge, fan and other 12V essentials, it’s plenty enough. The air conditioner deserves a separate conversation with the dealer. Having lithium and solar doesn’t automatically mean you can run it away from mains power, so check what’s required if that’s part of your plan.

Water comes from a single 80L tank, which you’ll need to factor into how long you stay between refills.

What can tow it?

That’s a question we can’t properly answer.

Jayco lists a DO35 coupling, but hasn’t published the JPod XC’s tare weight, ATM or towball weight there. Until those figures are available, we wouldn’t make assumptions about which vehicles can tow it just because it looks compact.

If your plans include rough roads, it’s also worth asking where Jayco says you can take it. The coupling is one part of the setup but warranty coverage can sometimes be a bit of an issue if you’re towing off-road.

Limited numbers, pricing by quote

Jayco says the JPod XC is launching in limited numbers, although it hasn’t said how many that means.

For now, you’ll need to speak with a dealer about the current tow-away price, delivery timing and what’s included on the camper.

The JPod XC looks like an interesting option for two people who enjoy cooking and relaxing outside but would appreciate a bed, air conditioning and room to stand up indoors. We’d like to see the price and towing weights published alongside the features, though. They’re a pretty big part of deciding whether it belongs on your shortlist.
