How to shop like a pro and bag a bargain at the caravan shows

With the Aussie caravan and camping show circuit having kicked off for the year, they’re a perfect opportunity to see what’s on offer in the industry. And these days, they’ve become more like “lifestyle” shows where you’ll find everything from caravans, motorhomes, campers and accessories, through to travel destinations. So, how do you go about getting a good deal from a show? For caravan show junkies like us, we think it all starts well before you even get there!
Some of the capital cities hold mega-show extravaganzas where you’ll really need a few days if you want to see everything. These types of shows often run a couple of times each year and under slightly different names to encourage more visitors. But don’t ignore shows outside of capital cities. Although the shows may be smaller in size, they still pack a punch with great deals. Sometimes, you’ll even find more local exhibitors from within that region who can provide local support after the show. So that’s great! That’s not to say the larger exhibitors don’t attend these shows, as they’ll likely be there too. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty of bagging a show deal.
Show ticket purchases are trending towards cashless these days, so purchase them online before leaving home. You’ll also find many of the major shows offer discounts for multiple-day entry tickets, so you can save some dollars there if visiting just one day isn’t enough.
Most shows run for a few days or more, so visiting on one of the quieter weekdays means fewer crowds. And while bargains can be had every day of the show, you might just bag a bigger bargain if you visit on the show’s last day. That’s when to put on your best negotiating hat to pick up a super special.
Pick up a show guide as you walk through the gate and grab yourself a seat. Have a highlighter with you that you can use to mark the exhibitors you’d like to visit and their location on the map. Then start collecting any brochures or pamphlets from the exhibitors you’re interested in. This helps you get a feel for what’s on offer and how much your budget can buy. In many cases where print brochures aren’t available, you can expect caravan and camper exhibitors to offer QR codes on their products. This allows you to get information digitally.
We also think attending seminars at shows is a good way to increase your knowledge on a range of RV topics. Check the show program for the seminar schedule. Work the times into your visit if you have a particular interest. Demonstrations are another great way to learn at the show as well. If you’re interested in cooking on the road, how a weight distribution hitch works using rigs and scales, or simply a demo of the latest gadgets, you’re sure to spot something interesting as you walk around.
If you’re shopping for accessories, it’s a good idea to research what you’re looking for before heading to the show. That way, you’ll have a better idea of the brands/models available and what sort of deal you can get elsewhere. Sometimes accessory manufacturers and designers are at the show as well, which is a real bonus if you’re after more info or a demo.
You can then do a comparison with their competition before finally getting to the price. Ask how their show special differs from buying outside of the show. This way, you can calculate the savings and hopefully bag that bargain.
Shows are the perfect place to see what you get for your money if you’re in the market for an RV. The number of manufacturers exhibiting at a show these days can be enormous. With such a vast range of brands, styles, sizes, layouts, and finishes on display, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed.
So the trick here is do you really need to look at all of them. Are you in the market to buy or simply eager to see the latest and greatest? Take it from us: It’s easy to develop an urge to trade up and buy the latest, so be careful.
In many cases, an RV display stand is exhibited by the manufacturer and usually supported by the dealers in that town. However, there can be exceptions when multi-franchise dealers are involved. Visiting a manufacturer’s stand is a good opportunity to ask lots of questions, particularly if you want something customised. Now is the perfect time to discuss your requirements and get the pros and cons first-hand. If you’re ready to make a purchase, a show provides that opportunity to negotiate a great deal. Manufacturers frequently have incentives and will compete to get that sale.
Caravan shows are supported by the suppliers to the industry. It’s not often you can talk to the likes of chassis and suspension suppliers directly, so make sure to take advantage of this opportunity if you’ve got any questions. You can use this knowledge to negotiate exactly what you want in an RV with the manufacturer and not what the manufacturer thinks you want.
You’ll also find big distributors at the show who are full of knowledge and know-how. They can demonstrate how their products differ and advise what might be best suited to your set-up going forward. New trends and new products are also kicked off at shows. So you’ll be in the box seat to experience what’s new in the industry.
When you have all the fabulous Aussie destinations represented in one location at a show, naturally, they’re all looking for your tourist dollar. You can easily spend an hour or two collecting brochures and talking to people from the region. This sort of information can be priceless in planning your next getaway, so don’t be shy! Ask what sort of discounts are on offer. You may just get a package deal with an extra night thrown in or perhaps discount prices on attractions.
If you’re new to the RV scene and don’t know where to start, think about joining one of the RV clubs and associations at the show. They’re generally happy to have a chat, explain what they do, and tell you what they offer. You may also find they have a special on for new and renewing memberships. Some clubs have affiliations with major holiday chains, tourist parks and accessory stores. So savings can certainly be made down the road.
Whether you’re looking for a show special, a few tips, or just trying to increase your knowledge, a caravan show delivers all this, plus lots more. There are savings to be made with just a little preparation, so don’t wait. We’ll see you there!
