We take a look at the Nemo by BLU3, a tankless diving system that bridges the gap between snorkelling and scuba diving.
Anyone who has been snorkelling or diving already knows that there is so much more to see below the surface. And anyone who has done both has at some point wished there was a way to experience the best of both worlds. By that, I mean diving without the hassle of all that equipment and snorkelling without needing to come up for breath once you duck dive down.
What would such an activity be called? Snorkel diving? Scuballing? Tankless scuba? Snorkiving?
Well, it turns out there actually is a tankless dive system on the market that does indeed have the best of both worlds. Bridging the gap between snorkelling and diving, it goes by the name of ‘Nemo’.
Nemo is all the fun of snorkelling with some of the major benefits of scuba diving, but without a lot of the fear that goes along with it. Best of all? Unlike traditional diving gear, it packs up small enough to fit in your RV.
Although we haven’t yet tested the Nemo tankless diving system out, it looks simply amazing and we can’t wait to get our hands on one.
Introducing the Nemo tankless dive system by BLU3
So how does it work?
Nemo is a compact tankless dive system that allows one diver to descend down to three metres. Using a rechargeable battery pack that lasts over an hour, the air is drawn from the surface above the water and pumped through the air hose. This allows the underwater explorer to breathe below the surface without the need for breath holding or to come up for air.
The technology is pretty awesome. Nemo’s Smart Reg™ is patent-pending and inside, features a waterproof sensor. This sensor detects when the diver inhales and sends an electronic signal which triggers the compressor to pump air at exactly the time and speed that the diver is inhaling.
See, I told you this dive system was tankless. How cool is that?
Because Nemo only pumps the exact pressure, flow rate and volume that the diver needs at their depth, it uses only a small amount of the energy required by any other underwater breathing system.
Important stats on the Nemo tankless dive system
Supports: 1 diver
Depth: 3 metres maximum
Run time: 60 – 90 minutes
Weight: 5 kg
Nemo’s lithium-ion battery can be swapped out for an additional 60+ minutes of tankless diving if you purchase a second battery for your system. Recharge time is three hours or less and as the battery is less than 100 Wh, it can travel with you on an aeroplane in carry-on luggage.
Now, you’re not going to get down to the same depths as you would with a full scuba set-up. But you can stay down and explore for quite a long period of time if you wish. There is nothing worse than getting down a metre or two to see the beautiful fish and coral and then having to come straight back up for air.
The Nemo is manufactured in Florida, USA by a company with over 40 years of production/experience with this type of tankless diving system equipment.
Anyone over the age of eight years of age can use Nemo regardless of whether they have zero of plenty of diving experience. However, there are some safety things you need to consider. See a little further down for more details.
The Nemo tankless dive system is a particularly great option for ocean lovers travelling in a caravan, camper or van. Why? Its compact size and weight mean it will easily fit in your caravan and you can explore the underwater world of Australia’s coast as you go. We love a good recreational item that’s sized for road trips!
Experienced divers will appreciate this no-fuss approach. It’s not always easy (or affordable) to source and hire scuba equipment when you need it. Besides, there are plenty of places to explore in Australia where three metres of depth is more than enough to have a great experience.
This tankless dive system is also ideal for anyone who dreams of scuba diving but has some reservations about it. I really like the idea of Nemo as it allows you to practice without pressure within the safety of your own pool while gaining confidence.
Safety stuff
Now of course, diving to any depth comes with risks… even a tankless dive system. So there are some rules to follow if you want one of these babies. You’ll need to do this online course first and sign a waiver to say you’ve done it.
You should have a reasonable level of fitness to do any sort of diving so all users must be able to swim 200 metres without stopping or tread water for 10 minutes continuously.
Kids over eight years of age can use the Nemo tankless dive system although they will be restricted to shallow pool usage until they are 10 years old. Anyone over the age of 10 years can use Nemo outside of a pool. Those under the age of 18 years must have parental or guardian supervision at all times.
The Verdict
Nemo seems like it would be a great adventure buddy to pack on your RV travels. Small enough to fit into a nook in your caravan and light enough to be portable, this tankless dive system could be a game changer. The hardest part? Deciding where to take your Nemo!
