Airxcel Suburban – RV and Caravan SHWS, AGA Certificate 4624 (Suspended)
Following our news post regarding the licence suspension of a range of Suburban hot water systems, we spoke to Mr Chris Wealthy, Managing Director & CEO of the Australian Gas Association to get more information and to see whether or not the licence suspension affects units already installed in caravans and motorhomes.
Mr Wealthy told RV Daily that following an incident involving a Suburban water heater, the Office of the Technical Regulator in South Australia brought this matter to his attention and asked AGA to investigate. The outcome of this investigation indicated that the safety concerns may not be limited to the heater involved in the incident and may affect the safe operation of other heaters. Accordingly, and in the interest of consumer safety, AGA Suspended the Certification and initiated an immediate investigation.
Mr Wealthy added that the manufacturer, Airexcel Inc., Suburban Division and the local Australian supplier, Coast to Coast RV Services Pty Ltd were cooperating fully and were actively participating in the ongoing investigation.
“The AGA considers this a consumer safety issue,” said Mr Wealthy. “As soon as we suspended the licence for the units we informed all the state and territory gas regulators who, in turn, instructed the distributors and retail sellers to stop all sales until the matter is resolved and consumer safety can be assured”.
Mr Wealthy went on to say that they are in the investigative testing phase and hope to have the results in the next few days. Should the results reveal an issue, further action will be recommended and the manufacturer and distributor stand ready to assist.
