Slide-on campers for electric trucks are here…now we just need the trucks

EarthCruiser are well known for making epic expedition campers, and they are definitely no ordinary camper built on the back of a 4WD truck. Starting in Australia in 2008, the company has offices in North Wollongong in NSW and Bend in Oregon, USA.
Some of EarthCruiser’s existing well-known vehicles in Australia include:
In January 2023, EarthCruiser launched into the world of EV overlanding with a pre-order deposit program for slide-on campers engineered for the next generation of EV trucks.
“There are many similarities with our current EarthCruiser habitat and one that would be required to function with an electric platform. It’s critical to maximise efficiency in order to allow vehicles to go further,” said EarthCruiser CEO/Founder Lance Gillies.
“EarthCruiser is extremely good at energy efficiency, and the amount of energy required to move an EC down a road is significantly less than our competitors.”
Fast forward nearly three months and EarthCruiser has joined forces with GMC. Why? To create an up-fit for their GMC Hummer EV, providing a zero-tailpipe emission solution to the overlanding arena. GMC is the first and only brand with three all-electric truck offerings. These include the Hummer EV Pickup, the Hummer EV SUV and the Sierra EV Denali.
“Electrification presents existing opportunities for overland use, such as precise torque control over terrain and ease-of-use, in addition to zero-tailpipe emissions. We’re thrilled to be working with GM’s team of top-tier EV engineers and look to develop an overland vehicle that’s truly made for, and will define, the future of the industry,” said Lance.
We have no idea yet. But the GMC Hummer EV already looks ballsy, and EarthCruiser’s existing range is epic. It could be a match made in top-dollar heaven, or it could be like when Homer designed a car for his long-lost brother, Herb. Only time will tell but my money is on the former, not the latter.
What is evident given the premium price tag on both GMC’s and EarthCruiser’s existing vehicles is that it will most likely be unaffordable for the average Joe and Jill.
Now this is all well and good for the USA, which already has several big-name EV utes on the market. But for Australia? Well, we’re still waiting on the EV trucks. And when they do arrive, I have no doubt that EarthCruiser’s Australian team will be ready to launch with a premium product.
Do you think they’ll let me try one out?
