4 motorbike camper trailers for a steel horse adventure

We take a look at 4 awesome motorbike camper trailers that will inspire you to start planning your own epic steel horse adventure.
My first motorbike was a Honda CT110. It was an ex-postie bike not so cleverly disguised with a coat of blue paint. It wasn’t pretty but at the tender age of 17 years, it was all I could afford. Nevertheless, it reliably took me to school and work until the day I got a stern talking to by a police officer for riding it on my learners.
Needless to say, I didn’t tell my parents about that. I hope they don’t read this.
Instead, I made haste with getting my licence and upgraded to a Yamaha XV250. I didn’t yet know that motorbike camper trailers existed but I dreamed of hitting the road on a steel horse adventure. Even if my horse was more of a pony. This served me well for a number of years until one day, I found myself next to a Harley at the petrol bowser. Its rider removed his helmet, grinned at me over a bushy beard and said “Hey babe, wanna get some real power between your legs.”
“Ugghh. no thanks,” I replied, wishing I could think of something more clever to say as I rode off to work, yet again dreaming of escape. By now, I knew that motorbike camper trailers were an option, and I would indeed need more power, so to speak.
This spurred me on to get what I like to call my “big boy” motorbike licence, and I upgraded to a YamahaXV1100. I bought it second-hand, and it was built the last year Yamaha manufactured the Virago1100s before phasing them out for the V-Stars and Road Stars. Would you believe I still have it?
These days, as I juggle kids and work, it sees more dust and less road than I’d like. And although I’m yet to hit the road in any of the motorbike camper trailers that I’ve dreamed about, I’ve certainly spent a lot of time researching them over the years.
So without further ado, here are four awesome motorbike camper trailers that will inspire you to dust off your steel horse and hit the road on a bucket list adventure.
Cost: from $3,990
At just 115kg, these Tour-Lite Roadster motorbike camper trailers will allow you to cruise the open road in luxury. Well, sort of. It’s still a camper trailer after all, but it’s definitely a huge step up from sleeping in one of those lightweight motorcycle swags.
The Tour-Lite Roadster motorbike camper trailer reportedly sets up in under three minutes and features lockable storage both under the bed and in the drawbar toolbox. The tent itself is made from Ripstop Poly Cotton and boasts large screened windows on either side to catch the breeze.
Cost: from $7,100
The Elite Sprinter Sports motorbike camper trailer is suited to larger-capacity motorbikes and trikes. It’s surprisingly roomy with a queen-sized bed and when the weather is less than ideal and you need to bunker down, the annex allows you to create a 2.4m x 2.8m fully enclosed room.
A range of optional extras are available on these motorbike camper trailers, including a 12v deep cycle battery and Redarc charging system, a front storage pod for your esky or small fridge, a spare wheel and a set of legs that will convert the front pod lid to a table when open.
Inside the trailer itself, you’ll find a whopping 600 litres of storage space.
Cost: from $9,950
The Elite Sprinter Limited Edition motorbike camper trailer is suited to larger-capacity motorbikes and trikes. The best part? Like Sprinter Sports, it can easily be erected by one person. The queen-sized bed ensures you have plenty of room to sleep and the front storage pod offers additional space for either your gear or an Esky/fridge.
Power your fridge, lights and small accessories with the Redarc solar and vehicle charging system. A fully enclosed annexe measuring 2.4m x 2.8m will keep you safe from the elements. This is definitely a massive step up from regular tent camping.
Optional extras for these motorbike camper trailers include a second annex, spare wheel, a cargo lid allowing you to convert your camper to a cargo trailer, LED lighting system and a 60 amp lithium-ion battery.
Cost: from $9,900
Originally built as a motorbike camper trailer, the Road Warrior Adventurer can also be seen following behind trikes and small cars. At only 230kg unloaded and with an ATM of 600kg, there is plenty of load-carrying capacity. AL-KO IRS axles are used to improve the stability of the trailer, thus reducing the risk of snaking under heavy loads. In addition, an optional engineered 50mm swivel coupling will allow you to lean into corners.
Mount the lightweight iKamper Roof Top Tent (RTT) up top and you’re good to go. Alternatively, skip the RTT and pack your camping gear in the trailer itself. Storage includes 1,150L in the main compartment, 148L in the front tub and two side storage areas of 51L.
