Mercedes Benz hasn’t been shy about its ambition to electrify its models. And that doesn’t leave out vans. The latest addition to Mercedes’ EQ cars is the Concept EQT Marco Polo Camper. Said to launch later in 2023 as a ready-to-go vehicle, this eco-conscious home on wheels is an accessible option for adventures, campers and families to get their hands on an electric camper. The price starts at around 49,000 euros (75,100 AUD).
“For us, the future is electric – regardless of the size or purpose of a van. The latest proof of this strategic direction is our new EQT with an all-electric drive. With the Marco Polo Module, we also have a first, simple solution for the all-electric camping trip on offer in the near future. In the second half of 2023, we plan to expand our range with a fully-fledged and also fully-electric micro camper.” says Klaus Rehkugler, Head of Sales Mercedes-Benz Vans.
Need to know details
The Concept EQT is based on the long-wheelbase EQT model, but a micro camper variant will be available for those who prefer a small home on wheels.
The camper is both cosy, comfortable and practical with a pop-up roof that allows for standing headroom in the lounge section of the camper. It sleeps and seats four people, perfect for families who want to make their adventures that extra bit eco-friendly.
The electric motor
The vehicle will come with an electric motor with an output of 90 kW (122hp) and a lithium battery of 45 kWh. Mercedes estimate the WLTP range to be 175 miles (282km); its battery is expected to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in under 38 minutes with a DC charger! In line with the eco-conscious outlook, solar panels are installed on the pop-up roof and a removable battery unit allows for self-sufficient energy.
Let’s chat about living features
Inside the pop-up roof, you’ll find a bed that sleeps up to two people. With an area of 1.97 metres by 0.97 metres and a disc spring system, you know it’ll be comfortable. For those who want to house four people, the back of the van boasts a sleeping area of 2 metres by 1.15 metres.
Other living facilities include a washing facility, a 16-litre refrigerator box, an induction hob and as another option, a removable gas cartridge cooker. A fold-out, adjustable table also sits in the interior ready for meals or work (if you’re a digital nomad!).
In terms of storage, you’re going to want to pack light. There isn’t heaps of room, but Mercedes has ensured at least a decent amount of storage space with a drawer system. For those days when you want to turn your van into a regular vehicle, the van’s camper equipment can be completely removed in just five minutes.
Overall, this looks like an epic electric camper at a decent price point. We can’t wait to see the final vehicle launch later this year! Stay tuned.
