Millions of vehicles in Aus contain ticking time bombs …
Ssangyong is returning to Australia with gusto. It’s going to be a factory-backed affair this time, rather than going through a specialty importer.
There’s going to be three models, two of which have good 4WD and towing potential: the Musso ute and the Rexton wagon. Both are based on the same platform, à la Fortuner/HiLux and D-Max/MU-X.
Older Ssangyong 4WDs have a small but fiercely loyal following, who are keen to defend the Indian-made vehicle and its old Benz underpinnings. It looks to be a similar affair still, with a seven-speed Mercedes gearbox running behind a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. The engine makes 130kW, and 420Nm @ 1600-2600rpm. Towing capacity will be somewhere around the 3-3.5 tonne mark, and a proper 4WD system with low-range will also be used.
Nothing in terms of pricing and specs has been announced. The Ssangyong will push affordable luxury, with big touchscreens, plenty of safety and interior tech. Stay tuned, as the Mahindra-owned brand starts to roll out a new presence in the marketplace.
