George, Jane or even Elroy, heck, it doesn’t matter who you think of when you hear the name ‘Jetsons’. What does matter, is what comes to mind. And if what comes to mind is flying cars, then you’re going to want to keep reading.

The Jetsons first aired in the 1960s and made comical guesses at what the future would be like. Flying cars, robots, and bizarre inventions that back then, seemed out of reach.

While some of the Jetsons ‘predictions’ have come true, such as video calling your boss, robot vacuums and 3D printing, it seems another cool Jetson idea has come to fruition. And it’s possibly the most exciting yet.

The flying car!

This car converts to an aircraft in under five minutes

Samson Sky has invented a flying car called the Switchblade. It’s a road-going car that converts to an aircraft in just three minutes. Sound crazy? I agree, but let me explain.

Whilst flying cars aren’t necessarily a new discovery to the industry, a variation that can be adapted from one form to another in under five minutes is truly mind-boggling. The Switchblade is not only quirky in appearance but has baffling technology behind it to create what is a truly Jetson-inspired vision of the future.

This 3-wheeled road-legal vehicle is a true engineering marvel for so many reasons. The wings and tail section are completely retractable which means it can quickly go from road-going to airborne in a matter of minutes, whilst even letting the lucky owner park it in their home garage.

The price?

For the eye-watering price of around USD $170,000 (AUD $250,000), you can get yourself one of these incredible sports cars. Wait, I mean aeroplane, wait, hang on a minute. Just kidding around, this vehicle is classified as an ‘experimental category aircraft’ which if you ask me, sounds a little more terrifying than ‘flying car’.

One thing I am certain of though is the team at Samson Sky are flat-out reminding potential owners that you will still require a driver’s license and a private pilot’s license in order to enjoy the full functions of your new ‘Switchblade’.

So, how will it work?

So you’ve driven yourself to your local airport, now what? Well, to put it simply, you transform your Switchblade into aeroplane mode, take it up to its maximum road speed of 200km/h, and take off from the runway.

With a maximum airspeed of over 320km/h and a range of just over 700 km, this vehicle truly is going to revolutionise interstate travel and laborious road trips.

Is the Switchblade just another gimmick?

Now, before you write the Switchblade flying car off as a gimmick with limited features, let me blow your mind. The highly praised ‘Skybrid Flying Car Drive System’ provides all the technology you would expect to see in a dedicated air-only aircraft. With autopilot, a hybrid drive-and-fly system, regenerative braking, reverse thrust for wet runways and even an in-built air brake to keep the drivers safe when on decent and landing.

Will this sort of jaw-dropping vehicle and its associated technology trickle its way through to the RV market, or even the Australian market? Only time will tell. But that isn’t going to stop us from keeping our fingers crossed!

Imagine one day being able to pack the flying car for a road trip into rural Australia that takes only hours, and not the whole day. It’s mind-blowing and I love it.
