The cheapest X-Class, which is a Pure-spec 2WD cab-chassis, is $45,450. The cheapest 4X4 X-Class is $50,400, which is a X 220 d and six-speed manual. This is the least powerful engine, with one turbo and 120kW/403Nm available. Pure gives you steel wheels, and is the only spec to use the less-powerful motor. Step up to the X 250 d with 140kW/450Nm, and you’re paying an extra $2000 for the mumbo ($52,400). The seven-speed auto price climbs to $55,300; roughly Ranger XLT or HiLux SR5 money. The medium-spec ‘Progressive’ only comes with the twin-turbo 140kW/450Nm motor, and starts at $54,990 with a tub and manual gearbox. Opt for a cab-chassis, and you save $950. Like the lesser spec, the automatic option costs $2900.

‘Power’ spec starts at $61,600, going up to $64,500 with an auto. This is the same Nissan-sourced 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel, which is a good performer. Mercedes’ own 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 will sit atop the range, with 190kW and 550Nm. When this lands, and how much it will cost is yet to be known. Expected to be the most powerful ute in Australia, we guess the price will be over $70,000.
