After 30-years of Australian innovation across their range of campers and caravans, Kimberley Kampers has finally given us a motorhome.
Founded in 1993 and manufactured in Ballina, NSW, a bit of clever counting on my fingers and toes tells me they’re turning 30 years. Does this make them one of Australia’s longest-standing luxury RV manufacturers? I believe so! Kimberley Kampers is celebrating with the launch of the Kruiswagen – its new deluxe motorhome – as well as dozens of premium upgrades to its existing range.
These guys sure know how to celebrate, right?
“To continue this tradition and celebrate our 30-year heritage, we’re expanding our range to include an offroad motorhome and, as always, increase the performance and comfort of our existing caravans,” said owner and CEO of Kimberley Kampers, James Cockburn.
Let’s take a look at Kimberley Kampers’ new Kruiswagen
Built on a 2024 Mercedes Benz platform with a 2″ lift and AWD fitted at the factory, Kimberley Kampers’ Kruiswagen is designed to venture off the beaten path in luxury. In case you’re wondering, you can drive the Kruiswagen with a standard driver’s license.
Capabilities
The Kruiswagen features a new 2.0L 4-cylinder twin-turbo diesel that’s been paired with a 9-speed Distronic gearbox. All of this sits on a set of BFG All Terrain tyres. According to Kimberley Kampers, the new engine is lighter and has more power. They also state it’s up to 31% more efficient than previous models.
The AWD system is capable off the tarmac with a 50/50 power split between the front and rear axles, and all the safety features we expect from a modern vehicle are included. This includes adaptive cruise control, lane assist, 360-degree surround cameras and a 10.5″ touchscreen.
Industry-first design features
Kimberley Kampers is an interesting company in that they’ve quietly been introducing industry-firsts to Australia for decades. It began with Gullwing storage boxes and fridge slides way back in 2003, to the Japanese Wrappon Toilet (heat-sealed waste) in 2021, to portable Starlink in 2023, with a whole lot more inbetween.
So I wasn’t really surprised (just impressed) when Kimberley Kampers shared a list of innovative design features for the Kruiswagen. These include:
- The use of lightweight composite, alloy, stainless and recycled PET as the materials of choice. Sustainable bamboo is used for drawer fronts.
- Smart space design to reduce clutter, such as a full-size double bed that retracts into the roof (leave your bed made up) and window-lined walls to create light and space.
- A 48-volt EcoFlow power hub with the lowest weight-to-power ratio of any model available. Hail-resistant solar panels are mounted on the roof.
- Both indoor and outdoor kitchens with hot and cold water to both, a full-size shower and a composting toilet.
