We’ve put together four cool things you can do to maintain your air-conditioner, to make sure it works when you need it
For those of you who are relying on your caravan air conditioner to keep cool in summer, you may find it doesn’t quite work as effectively as you may have expected. To keep your air conditioner working, you need to do a little regular maintenance:
1. Ensure the internal filter is cleaned regularly. These clog up with dust very quickly especially when the air conditioner is running all day and night. Remove the filter and clean away the dust and lint with a small, soft brush.
2. Limit the heat soak into the caravan. It doesn’t matter how well insulated your caravan is, the ambient heat from outside the van will soak through to the interior and limit the air conditioner’s effectiveness. Avoid parking your caravan in direct sunlight. Extend all awnings. Avoid using any appliances inside the van that give off heat such as stove tops, ovens, even the LCD TV will add to the heat inside the van.
3. Keep the external vents clear. There are vents on the external casing of your air conditioner and, if these get blocked with leaves and other debris, it will seriously compromise the effectiveness of the unit. If you’re camped under a tree, you will need to check and clear these vents regularly.
4. Have your air conditioner serviced regularly. Over the years, dust and debris will get inside the air conditioner, reducing its ability to cool your caravan. Contact a caravan air conditioning specialist to clean and service it every two years. If you take your caravan off-road, you may need to have it serviced more often.
