Taking your dog along for an eBike adventure is a game-changer. Whether it’s cruising through your local trails, exploring dog-friendly campsites, or tackling the great Aussie outdoors, the right setup can make the ride safe and fun for both you and your furry mate. Given the extra weight and space required to carry a dog, we’re going to talk about cargo eBikes and eTrikes for your dog, including things to think about and eight great cargo eBikes and eTrikes to consider.

What are cargo eBikes?

A cargo eBike is an electric bike designed to carry heavier loads, such as pets, children, groceries and other items. They often feature a sturdy frame, longer wheelbase, increased load capacity and a box or flatbed in which to carry your load.

What is an eTrike?

An eTrike is an eBike with three wheels instead of two, featuring one wheel at the front and two wheels at the back. As a result, they tend to be more stable, and due to the two wheels at the back, there is room to carry cargo between them. Their stability makes them a great choice for those with larger dogs or dogs that tend to move around a bit.

It’s important to remember that steering a trike is a little different than steering a normal bike. Basically, you steer a trike by steering, and you steer a bike by leaning. It may not seem important, but if you’ve never ridden a trike before, you’ll need to go for a few rides without your dog first to get used to it.

What about using a towable dog trailer?

This article on cargo eBikes and eTrikes is for those of you who want to carry your dog on your bike and don’t want to use a pet/child trailer. That’s a whole other subject worthy of its own article – which we may cover a little later.

Let’s get into it, but before you hit the pedals with these great eBikes listed below, there’s a little bit to consider first.

Things to consider when buying an eBike to ride with your dog

Dogs size and weight

A very small dog (like chihuahua-sized) will easily fit in a front basket, but anything larger and the weight can potentially throw your steering off-kilter every time your dog moves, making it dangerous for both of you.

Also important is whether your bike can structurally and physically hold your dog’s size and weight. Obviously, they need to comfortably fit in whichever basket/carrier you attach to your bike. But will the added weight put you over your bike’s recommended carrying limit?

Local laws

The laws on dogs and eBikes vary between states. For e.g. in Queensland, it is legal to carry your dog in a safe manner; however, you are not allowed to lead your dog on a bicycle, including by tethering it to the eBike.

Your dog’s behaviour

Is your dog cool, calm and collected in all situations? Or will they potentially bark and jump around in excitement every time you pass another dog or rider, causing you stress and your whole bike to wobble out of control dangerously? If your dog is larger and a little on the hypo side, it might be worth considering a trike, which has a little more stability in the rear.

Secure attachment

Obviously, you can’t dink your dog on the frame like you did with friends when you were a kid, and you’ll need to attach a basket, crate, or dog carrier of sorts that is suitable for your bike. You’ll also need to ensure that your dog is secure in said attachment.

Comfort

Whatever you carry your dog in, make sure to add a soft, non-slip mat or cushion to keep your dog comfortable during the ride. If you’ve ever sat for longer than five minutes on a milk crate without a cushion, you’ll know exactly how uncomfortable it is. Also, ensure they have adequate airflow if it’s an enclosed basket of sorts.

Training and preparation

If your dog has never gone for a ride before, you’ll need to introduce them to it gradually. Familiarise your dog with the cargo eBike or eTrike in a safe stationary setting and practice with a short ride at home to get your dog used to it.

By thinking about these things first, you’ll make any bike ride adventures with your dog a heck of a lot safer, enjoyable and stress-free for both of you.
