The figures are in for overall vehicle sales, and there is one that reigns supreme: the Toyota HiLux. It was Australia’s best-selling vehicle in 2016 (31,076 4X4 models), the first time a ute has taken the overall honour.

The second-place ute is the Ford Ranger, with 30,880 4X4 models being sold. Isuzu’s MU-X was the best-selling medium-sized wagon (7018), beating the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (7018), Toyota Fortuner (3871) and Holden Colorado7/Trailblazer (3285). Sales of the LandCruiser Prado remains as strong as ever (14,730), where the competitive Ford Everest made significant sales growth (3614) and the Jeep Grand Cherokee slumped very heavily (6379, down almost 50%).

Sales of the 200 Series LandCruiser returned to positive territory; a 28.4% growth saw a total of 11,813 units being shifted in 2016. Nissan Patrol sales have all but dried up; no diesel option in the Y62 and a dated driveline in the Y61 means only just over 2000 wagons left showrooms.
