In this action-packed episode of Are You RV Safe?, John and Borgy take us off the beaten track and teach the crew how to tow in Australia’s trickiest off-road conditions. Whether you’re cruising through corrugated roads or tackling soft sand on a beach, here’s everything you need to know to tow safely.

Adjusting tyre pressures: the key to off-road success

John can’t stress enough how important it is to adjust tyre pressures based on the terrain:

  • Rough dirt roads: Drop your tyres to about 75% of their recommended pressure. For example, 36 PSI can be dropped to around 26-28 PSI.
  • Sand driving: Lower your pressures down to between 12-20 PSI depending on how soft the sand is.
  • Use Mean Mother Tyre Deflators to quickly adjust your pressures without hassle.

Off-road towing tips from the pros

Taking your RV off the tarmac? Here’s how to keep things smooth:

  • Lower your speed: Stay slow and steady when climbing hills, going downhill, or navigating rough terrain.
  • Engage four-wheel drive: Most newer 4WDs let you engage 4WD with the twist of a dial. Switch to low range for better control on steep or tricky spots.
  • Use an off-road hitch: This allows more movement and flexibility when towing on uneven surfaces.

Night driving: watch out for wildlife

Driving at night means you’re more likely to encounter wildlife. Here’s how to stay safe:

  • Install driving lights: Our Amaroks had Lightforce driving lights, including Beast LEDs that switch between spot and flood settings. A good set of lights makes all the difference.
  • Go slow: Animals like kangaroos are most active at dusk and dawn, so be extra careful during these times.

Sand driving essentials

Ready to hit the beach? Here’s what you need to know when towing on sand:

  • Drop your tyre pressures: Go down to around 10-12 PSI for the trailer and 12-14 PSI for the vehicle.
  • Engage low range: Low-range gears help you maintain control and traction on soft sand.
  • Avoid sharp turns: Move slowly and avoid any quick or sharp manoeuvres to keep from getting bogged.
