What tools should you always have on hand in case you need a bush fix?
John explains the importance of spares when travelling
John’s tip for smooth travel? Be prepared. Here’s what you should pack before you hit the road in case a bush fix is required:
Filters: Have spare oil, air, and fuel filters handy—especially if you’re tackling dusty conditions.
Torque wrench: Keep a torque wrench in your kit to ensure those wheel nuts are tightened in a star pattern, keeping your wheels secure.
Ryco catch can: This nifty device catches oil vapours from your engine, preventing gunk buildup. Check it every 10,000 km.
Before you head off, make sure your vehicle is in top shape.
Key points:
Get your vehicle thoroughly checked, focusing on underbody wiring and components.
Try replacing parts like the air filter at home so you can do it in the bush if needed.
Plugging a tyre: a bush essential
Tyre plugging lessons
Punctures are a part of life on the road, but knowing how to fix one can keep you rolling. Here’s how John walks the learners through it:
Kit required: A tyre plug kit.
How-to: Drill the hole, insert the plug, apply lube, and reinflate the tyre. Easy as!
Tip: Tyre plugs are a quick fix to get you to the next town, so remember to replace the tyre at the nearest stop.
Keep an eye on your rig
When you’re covering long distances, things can loosen up. John’s daily checks to avoid a bush fix include:
Feel for heat: After refuelling, check the wheel hubs and tyres. If they’re too hot to touch, your bearings or brakes might need attention.
Crawl under the trailer: Look for loose bolts, worn-out cables, or anything else that looks off.
Snake bite kit: do you know how to use it?
Survival First Aid Kit
One of the big lessons was how to use a snake bite kit—something you should never leave home without. Here’s the drill:
Don’t move the victim: Keep them still to slow the spread of venom.
Pressure bandage: Wrap the bite site and limb with a pressure bandage, using the indicators to apply the right tension.
Splint it: Immobilising the area is a must to stop further damage.
What kit to use?: You can pick up these kits tailored to 4WD and RV travelers from Survival First Aid.
