In an effort to alleviate cost-of-living pressures, the Queensland Government has announced a 20% reduction in registration fees for all light vehicles (including trailers) weighing 4.5 tonnes or less, effective from 16 September 2024. This move is set to significantly benefit the state’s caravan and tow vehicle owners.

Key highlights:

  • 20% registration reduction: This reduction applies to all eligible light vehicles for a period of 12 months.
  • 20% discount for RV owners: Caravan and tow vehicle owners will see a combined discount of 20% on their registrations.
  • Support for families: Jason Plant, CEO of Caravanning Queensland, commended the initiative as a positive step to help van-loving families afford their next road trip.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Bart Mellish MP, highlighted the commencement date and the target vehicles, emphasizing the government’s commitment to easing financial burdens on Queenslanders.

Caravanning remains a top choice for affordable holidays

The recent Let’s Go Queensland Caravan and Camping Supershow, hosted by Caravanning Queensland, showcased the ongoing popularity of caravanning as a holiday option. Held at the Brisbane RNA Showgrounds, the event featured nearly 250 exhibitors presenting the latest in camper trailers, motorhomes, tent trailers, caravans, and accessories.

Industry insights:

  • Family buyers: Jason Lawrence, Director of Lawrence RV, reported a surprising 50% of sales in their Lotus and Atlas caravan models came from family buyers, despite the challenging economic climate.
  • Retiree interest: Mark Rixon, National Sales Manager of Paradise Luxury Motor Homes, noted increased interest from self-funded retirees seeking luxury and style in their RVs.

Supershow success and innovations

Jason Plant, CEO of the Caravan Trade and Industries Association of Queensland, reported strong attendance throughout the five-day event, with Saturday drawing the largest crowd. This year’s event aimed to be more than just a caravan expo, featuring the new RV Touring Hub and the popular Weight, Towing, and Touring educational Masterclasses.

The future looks bright for Queensland RV enthusiasts

The 2024-25 budget announcement and the successful Supershow highlight the vibrant and resilient nature of Queensland’s caravanning community. With significant savings on registrations and a strong showing at the Supershow, the future looks bright for RV enthusiasts across the state.
