We all know MDC, right? They’ve been around for a while now. They began as a budget camper trailer importer, and over the years, refined and improved their products to the point that they’re now one of the better-built camper/caravan brands on the market – we wrote about it HERE.
After recently releasing their latest off-road campers and caravans, as well as majorly upgrading their electrics to equal or better almost all of their rivals, MDC have also just casually gone ahead and released an entirely new range of road-going caravans – the MDC Forte SR Series.
Why an on-road series?
This move makes a lot of sense. More and more vanners are staying on the blacktop these days with so many amazing locations accessible by road. You don’t really need a reinforced chassis and big AT tyres to visit a caravan park, and all of the extra weight and height don’t do your fuel consumption any favours.
The new models are up to 30% lighter than the off-road equivalents (meaning they can be towed by smaller vehicles and affect fuel consumption less), come with independent suspension, have a five-year structural chassis and drawbar warranty and have electrical systems that are on par with much higher priced vans. The range spans from 9ft to 19ft in size with a bunch of layout options, and start from $29,990, so there’s something for all tastes.
You can get all the specs and deets HERE, but we’ve picked out a couple of our faves below along with the highlights.
MDC Forte SR9
At just 9-feet long and weighing 1300kg (that’s less than a lot of camper trailers btw), the smallest in the range is perfect for couples looking to get a way for a few sneaky weekenders, or for peeps with a smaller tow-rated SUV.
Highlights:
MDC Forte SR11
Step up by a couple of feet and you get an internal ensuite toilet/shower while still only weighing 1600kg or so. So you can go visit your parents without actually having to share the house with them by pulling this behind your Kluger. Score!
Highlights:
MDC Forte SR16 Island
The Forte 16-footer comes in a few different internal layouts, but for us the island bed configuration is the winner. Why? Have you ever tried to climb over your partner in an east-west bed in the middle of the night while desperately needing to pee and inadvertently taken a shot to the pills? I have, and it’s a strong do not recommend for me. Island beds for life.
Highlights:
MDC Forte SR19
The biggest Forte model is also, unsurprisingly, the most decked out. If you’re thinking of doing a couple of longer trips or even hitting the blacktop full-time as a nomad, this is your guy. And it still only tips the scales at ~2400kg tare, so the list of tow vehicles is longer than your Dad’s dissertation on why he’s smarter than everybody he’s ever worked with.
Highlights:
These models are still fresh off the manufacturing hot-press, so display models are still making their way to MDC dealers. If you’re keen, get in touch and they’ll be able to tell you the whens and wheres.
