MDC has just launched what could be one of the smartest buys in the hybrid caravan market. The Forbes 11 hybrid caravan is a compact off-roader that won’t break the bank, and it’s packed with features that usually cost thousands more. Moreover, at under $50,000, it deserves a serious look from anyone shopping in this space.

Who is the Forbes 11 hybrid caravan for?
If you love going off-grid but don’t want to tow a full-size caravan or spend a fortune, this is worth considering. At just 11 feet (3.35 metres), the Forbes 11 is genuinely compact. Furthermore, with a tare weight of around 1,950kg and ATM of 2,500kg, it opens up towing options for a wider range of vehicles.
This is ideal for couples who want off-road capability without the bulk of a traditional caravan. Additionally, the Tuson stability control system makes it easier to tow, particularly if you’re newer to caravanning.
What makes it off-road ready?
MDC hasn’t cut corners on the off-road setup. The hot dipped galvanised chassis, X-Track independent trailing arm suspension and off-road mud terrain tyres mean you can confidently tackle gravel roads and head beyond the bitumen. However, this isn’t a for heavy offroad use, it’s designed for typical Australian off-grid touring rather than 4WD tracks.
The real standout is the off-grid power setup. There’s a 200Ah lithium battery backed by 550W of rooftop solar and a 1600W pure sine wave inverter. In other words, you’ve got genuine free camping capability without needing to upgrade later.
Living space and practicality
The external stainless steel kitchen with gas cooktop, integrated sink and bench space is a smart touch. Cooking outdoors keeps the heat and smells outside, which matters when you’re in a compact space.
Inside, you’ll find a diesel heater for cold nights and air conditioning for those scorching outback days. The plush king-size bed and lounge setup provide genuine comfort after a day on the tracks. Nevertheless, remember this is an 11-foot hybrid – space is maximised, but it’s still compact living.
The value proposition
Here’s where it gets interesting. The Forbes 11 hybrid caravan will retail for under $50,000, which is competitive for what you’re getting. When you consider the lithium power system, independent suspension, and off-road capability, you’d typically be looking at significantly more in other brands.
MDC founder Vaughan Hindley says the Forbes 11 captures what people love about the Forbes range in a lighter, more agile package. Based on the specs, that seems fair. The Forbes series has built a solid reputation since 2019, and this compact version should appeal to a different segment of the market.
Is the Forbes 11 right for you?
The compact 11-foot design is a deliberate choice that brings real advantages. You’ll find it easier to tow, simpler to manoeuvre into tighter camping spots, and more capable on narrower tracks. For couples who prioritise getting off the beaten path over maximum living space, this trade-off makes perfect sense.
However, if you’re planning extended trips with kids, need significant storage for hobbies like fishing or mountain biking, or simply prefer more elbow room, you might want to consider one of their larger caravans instead.
Similarly, the 200Ah lithium battery and 550W solar setup is solid for typical off-grid use. If you’re running a fridge, charging phones and laptops, and using lights, you’ll be fine. Nevertheless, if you plan to run high-draw appliances constantly or work remotely with multiple devices, it’s worth calculating your power needs first.
Where to see it
The Forbes 11 hybrid caravan will debut at the Let’s Go Explore Caravan & RV Expo at Brisbane Showgrounds from 30 October to 2 November 2025. If you’re in the market, it’s worth a walk-through to see how the space works in person and ask questions about build quality and warranty.
MDC was the first offroad camper trailer and hybrid caravan importer in Australia to obtain RVMAP accreditation and is one of the few brands in the industry with ISO9001 Quality Certification. That’s worth noting when you’re comparing options.
