We take a look at the F14, the latest (with the lowest profile) from Cub Campers.
Cub Campers are one of the original and one of the best Aussie-built camper trailers. Starting with their tried-and-true rear-fold camper in the 1960s, Cub have been a mainstay on the Australian camping scene for over half a century. Long established in the industry as an innovator and market leader, Cub Campers has recently launched the latest iteration in their hybrid range: the F14.
Part caravan, part camper the F14 hybrid is not only incredibly easy to tow, but can also fit into most suburban garages thanks to its relatively low 2.06m height (the lowest in Cub hybrid history) in the folded down position. It also tows fairly well, tipping the scales at a modest 1730kg tare and 170kg ball weight. So it can comfortably be lugged behind many SUVs and pretty much all mid-sized 4X4s.
When the button is pushed and the electric actuators have done their thing, there’s an internal height of just over 2m, with a spacious feel, given the north-south bed takes up the majority of the room. There’s also a lounge and internal kitchenette in the F14 that boasts 50% more storage and bench space than earlier hybrid models from Cub Campers.
Outdoor living is still king
Even with the inside being a great space to spend a rainy arvo, the focus, as with the majority of campers, is still outdoor living. On the driver side of the F14, there’s an external shower and tent (with Portaloo storage), while around the passenger side under the Fiamma awning is the pull-out stainless kitchen and fridge slide that can be fitted with a 115L Dometic fridge directly from Cub Campers. The kitchen also has a galley pantry above the three-burner Smev stove – another first for the brand.
The electrical side of things
If you like your tunes, there’s a four-speaker (two internal plus two external) Fusion Bluetooth stereo to ensure that your neighbours are infuriated by your playlist of Bieber and mumble rap. The sound system (along with the rest of the 12V system) is fed electrons via the standard 150Ah lithium battery, which comes with a five-year warranty.
There are also a pair of REDARC 180W monocrystalline solar panels up on the roof to keep things as off-grid-ready as possible. It should also be noted that the electrical system (like pretty much everything else on Cub Campers’ F14) is able to be optioned up to the gills. Anything up to 600Ah of battery and up to 1080W of solar are available. You know, if you feel like bringing your 12V locomotive along on your trip.
Hydration is handled by a 100L freshwater tank and a 50L greywater tank keeps the sink drain from flooding your campground. If you do a lot of desert travel, or simply enjoy showering four times per day, up to 300L of freshwater can be carried as an optional extra.
Let’s talk about price and availability of Cub Campers’ F14
