Illawarra region

Commence your road trip in Sydney, embarking on a scenic expedition through the Royal National Park toward Stanwell Park and Coalcliff Beach. Here, at Coalcliff Beach, NSW, a captivating ocean pool stands in stark contrast against the dramatic backdrop of the escarpment.

The Illawarra region of NSW boasts a series of ocean pools, stretching from the southern fringes of the Royal National Park to the renowned coastal town of Kiama. Notable pools include Coledale, Bulli, Towradgi, Port Kembla, and North Wollongong.

Nuns Pool, situated at Flagstaff Point in Wollongong, boasts a rich history dating back to the 1830s, making it one of NSW’s oldest ocean pools. Tucked below the lighthouse, Nuns Pool (formerly known as Chain Baths) resides in a small, sheltered cove, accessible through a narrow path carved into the sandstone.

Venturing further south to Kiama, NSW, the Blowhole Point Ocean Pool provides a secure swimming spot near the world’s largest blowhole. And if you’re still not done, a 15-minute stroll leads to Black Beach Reserve, home to the Olympic-size Continental Ocean Pool where you can smash out 50-metre laps.

Continuing your RV journey, a 15-minute drive south of Kiama brings you to the coastal haven of Gerringong. Ourie Ocean Pool, at the southern end of Werri Beach, invites swimmers with its rectangular design carved into a flat rock shelf and a smooth concrete bottom—a perfect destination for a rejuvenating summer swim in NSW.

From the Illawarra to the Shoalhaven region

Extend your journey southward into the Shoalhaven region of NSW, where a one-hour drive reveals the Huskisson Ocean Pool in Huskisson. This coastal town, with a rich shipbuilding heritage, offers opportunities to explore the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum after your swim.

A 45-minute drive even further south of Huskisson leads to Mollymook, home to the famous Mollymook Bogey Hole on the headland south of the beach. Additionally, a brief five-minute drive further down the coast to Ulladulla also presents a delightful south coast NSW ocean pool.

The Sapphire Coast

If you’ve ventured over five hours south of Sydney, you’ll find yourself at Bermagui on the Sapphire Coast, where one of NSW’s renowned ocean pools, the Blue Pool, awaits. Celebrated for its picturesque setting, this 50-metre pool transitions from azure to turquoise and green, providing an excellent venue for lap swimming. Adjacent to the pool, a shallow wading pool offers an ideal spot for kids.

Last but not least, explore the southernmost reaches of the NSW coastline to discover the hidden treasure of Aslings Beach Ocean Rock Pool. Nestled into the pink-and-white cliffs at Aslings Beach in Eden, it’s approximately a six-hour drive from Sydney. This gem is conveniently located just a short walk from town.

Though its unassuming profile may pose a challenge to spot from a distance along the beach, a brief trek over the rocks during low tide reveals this secluded pool—a perfect opportunity for a refreshing dip before the incoming tide deposits seaweed.

So from Kiama’s multitude of pools to the azure allure of Bermagui’s Blue Pool and the hidden gem of Aslings Beach Rockpool in Eden, give these ocean pools on the south coast of NSW a spot on your bucket list.
