If you’re heading to Katoomba for a few days and want to see the best of the Blue Mountains without rushing around, this laid-back itinerary has got you covered. From stunning waterfalls to sweet treats to iconic tourist destinations, here’s how to make the most of your RV adventure in Katoomba.
Day 1: Settle in and get your bearings
Morning:
Pick up your RV from StarRV in Sydney (if you don’t already have your own) and make tracks to Katoomba, stopping for lunch along the way.
Afternoon:
After you’ve arrived and set up at Katoomba Tourist Park, take it easy with a short walk over to Katoomba Falls. The Night-Lit Walk is just across the road and is a great way to stretch your legs after the journey. The pathway is beautifully lit, so take your time and enjoy the evening air. If you’re visiting in winter, make sure you’ve got a warm jacket on—it can get pretty cold.
Dinner:
Once you’re done, wander into town along Katoomba Street (or grab an Uber) and grab a bite to eat. Whether it’s a casual pub meal or something a little fancier, there are plenty of options to suit your mood.
Day 2: A full day at Scenic World
Morning:
Get an early start and head to Scenic World for a full day of exploration. Start with a ride on the Scenic Railway—it’s the steepest railway in the world and a fun way to kick off the day. Once you’ve reached the valley floor, wander along the Scenic Walkway, a 2.4-kilometre elevated boardwalk through the lush rainforest. It’s an easy walk and a great way to immerse yourself in nature without too much effort.
Mid-morning:
Next, join the Buunyal Aboriginal Cultural Tour. Led by local Gundungurra guides, this tour offers a unique insight into the cultural heritage of the region. You’ll ride the railway down into the valley again, learn about the traditional uses of the land, and hear stories that have been passed down through generations. It’s a slower-paced activity that gives you a deeper connection to the area.
Lunch:
When you’re ready for lunch, there’s no need to leave Scenic World—grab a bite at one of the onsite cafes and take in the stunning views while you eat. It’s a good spot to rest up before more adventures.
Afternoon:
After lunch, take your time exploring the rest of Scenic World. Jump on the Scenic Cableway for breathtaking views of the Jamison Valley, or ride the Scenic Skyway over the cliffs for a bird’s-eye view of Katoomba Falls and the surrounding landscape.
Evening:
Finish the day with something truly special—book in for the Beyond Skyway experience. You’ll get to ride on top of the Skyway cabin for unbeatable views at sunset. Safely harnessed, you can take in the scenery from 270 metres above the forest floor before descending back into the cabin and toasting the day with a drink. It’s the perfect way to end your Scenic World adventure.
Important – you’ll need to pre-book the Buunyal Aboriginal Cultural Tour and the Beyond Skyway experience well before you arrive.
Day 3: The Three Sisters and a local hike
Morning:
Jump on the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus (there’s a stop right outside the Katoomba Tourist Park) and start your third day with a visit to the famous Three Sisters. Head over to Echo Point Lookout for some incredible views of this iconic rock formation and the vast Jamison Valley below. If you’re feeling up for a short hike, take the track down closer to the base of the Three Sisters for a more intimate look at this legendary site.
Afternoon:
After soaking in the views, jump back on the bus and ride over to Lyrebird Dell for a more peaceful, less touristy walk. The hike to the Pool of Siloam is a lovely, quiet trail through the bush, leading to a tranquil grotto and a small pool. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the calm of nature, away from the crowds.
Evening:
In the evening, head back into town for dinner along Katoomba Street. There’s plenty of good options, whether you’re in the mood for a casual meal or something more refined.
Day 4: Blue Mountains Explorer Bus adventure
Morning:
Hop on the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus for a full day of sightseeing. The bus takes you on a loop of 37 stops, so you can hop on and off wherever takes your fancy. First stop, the Blue Mountains Chocolate Company—treat yourself to a hot chocolate or try their famous fondue set. It’s a sweet way to experience brunch.
Late morning:
Jump back on the bus and head over to Leura Village, a charming little town full of boutique shops and cafes. Take a leisurely stroll around the Leura Mall, grab a coffee, and explore the unique stores offering local crafts and treats.
Lunch:
For lunch, pick one of Leura’s cozy cafes, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can pack a picnic and enjoy it in one of the many scenic spots around town.
Afternoon:
Continue your bus adventure by exploring other spots like the Everglades Historic House and Gardens, which offer stunning views and beautifully landscaped gardens. If you’re after more walking, the bus also stops at plenty of scenic trails and lookouts that offer easy access to some of the best views in the Blue Mountains.
Evening:
After a full day of sightseeing, head back to Katoomba Tourist Park for a quiet evening. If you’re still feeling like exploring, head into town for one last dinner or a relaxing drink at one of the local pubs.
That’s it!
That’s it—four days of relaxed exploring in Katoomba, with plenty of time to soak in the sights without feeling rushed.
