Among other aspects of life that demand a greener approach, RV travel is an area ripe with opportunities for eco-friendly transformations. This all sounds well and good, but how exactly can you go about it? Well, we’ve got a few ideas.

Minimise water consumption

As it is at home, water consumption in your RV is a major thing to consider when it comes to being eco-friendly. If you’re already in a good habit of having quick showers and minimising how much water you’re using in your house, then you’re likely off to a better start when it comes to your motorhome. One handy way to assist the process is to install low-flow faucets and showerheads. Rest assured, there are options on the market that won’t compromise the enjoyability of your shower, still allowing a decent flow of water pressure.

Other ways to minimise your water consumption include installing pull-down faucets in your sinks to assist in cleaning the dishes without having to fill the sink with water. As well as fixing leaks promptly as soon as they arise.

If you’ve got any plants on board, you can capture and reuse greywater from your sinks and showers to water them. I remember this vividly from my childhood when Grandma’s shower was always lined with buckets to capture water for her garden.

Regularly maintain your RV

As you’d already be aware, changing the oil and replacing filters is imperative for the longevity of your adventure machine. However, it’s also important to making your RV a more eco friendly and responsible vehicle. This is because the less frequently you maintain your RV’s engine, the dirtier it’ll run, which naturally does the outside world absolutely no favours.

Shop local

Are you travelling through towns regularly on your trips? You may want to consider shopping locally to support small businesses along the way. Not only will the business itself receive an economic boost, but shopping locally is beneficial for the environment for several reasons.

The first and obvious one is that it reduces the carbon footprint associated with goods transportation, thus making it a more eco friendly option for RV travel. Buying locally removes the need for shipping and therefore reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Another reason is that local businesses are more likely to use sustainable practices in their production processes, especially when it comes to farm fresh produce. They are also more likely to source their materials locally, further reducing the environmental impact.

Minimise your waste

As much as we all despise washing the dishes, especially if you’re someone who leaves that job until last, utilising reusable plates and cups is one way to reduce your waste on the road. It’s also a great idea to bring along a second bin that’s reserved for recycling items, so you can continue to do your part even when you’re exploring the great outdoors.

Opt for eco-friendly cleaning products

By choosing eco-friendly cleaning products such as Koala Eco in your RV, which uses Australian essential oils, you’ll be distributing a non-toxic, natural product that contains no synthetic fragrance, dyes or phosphates. Benefitting both the external environment and your health, eco-friendly product use is a small gesture that allows a big impact. They’re even packaged in recycled bottles, to allow you to reuse, refill and recycle.

Be selective with the campgrounds you visit

When choosing what campground you’re going to perch up at on your trip, opt for those that take environmental sustainability into account. Sites that offer recycling facilities, eco-friendly RV amenities, and follow responsible waste management practices are going to assist you in being a more eco-friendly camper along your journey.

Implement solar energy

Ever cooked something with solar energy and exclaimed, “the sun cooked this!”? Nope, just me? If there’s one thing I’ll likely never tire of, it’s admiring the abilities of solar power. Not only is it incredible that we can use the sun to charge our devices or power our equipment, but it’s an extremely eco friendly option for your RV. Using solar panels on the roof of your RV will, in turn, reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Replace your lights with LEDs

You may already know that traditional bulbs consume more power and therefore let off more heat in your RV. This can then lead to a hotter interior temperature, encouraging you to run your air conditioner more and use more power. Installing LED lights in their place is one small step toward reducing your carbon footprint and being a more eco friendly RV traveller.

As travellers, we know you love the environment more than most. Everything you see and experience today can remain intact for future generations to enjoy if you do your part.
