Why this GVM upgrade matters for caravanners
Ironman 4×4 has released a federally approved Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) upgrade for the BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute, increasing its allowable mass from 3500 kg to 3850 kg. This change effectively makes the Shark 6 a genuine one-tonner and lifts payload from around 790 kg to 1140 kg.
For caravanners, that means more breathing space for tow-ball weight, passengers, touring fit-outs and gear, all while staying compliant.
BYD Shark 6 hardware changes explained
The kit lifts axle capacities to 1800 kg at the front and 2150 kg at the rear (up from 1651 kg and 1927 kg respectively). Towing capacity remains 2500 kg braked, and Gross Combined Mass stays steady at 5750 kg, so the increase is squarely in payload rather than towing.
Owners can also expect a 30–35 mm suspension lift thanks to Ironman’s IM2.5 monotube shock absorbers, tuned for load control and ride quality. Kits are available in Medium, Heavy and Extra-Heavy constant-load variants, covering everything from a light touring canopy to carrying up to 900 kg.
On-road and towing benefits of the upgrade
The headline benefit is the extra 350 kg of legal payload. That margin makes it easier to manage a realistic caravan tow-ball load, a full cabin of passengers or a lot more travel gear without tipping over the limits. The rear axle’s higher rating also reduces the risk of overloading at the back – one of the most common issues picked up during roadside checks.
What Ironman 4×4 says
“Australia’s ute market is fiercely competitive, and the BYD SHARK 6 is already turning heads in the PHEV space,” said Matt Frost, COO at Ironman 4×4. “With our GVM upgrades, owners can now match electric innovation with genuine one-tonne capability without sacrificing comfort, safety, or performance.”
Pricing and availability
The GVM upgrade is available both pre- and post-registration through Ironman 4×4’s authorised dealer network. Online listings confirm all three kit classes carry the 3850 kg rating. Fitted pricing is reported from around $4190, though costs vary depending on kit specification and dealer installation. Buyers should confirm state certification requirements before fitting.
