Hybrid caravans are one of the fastest growing segments in the RV market. Buyers are attracted to the compact, go-anywhere capacity most hybrids offer. In this second article in our Caravans for Beginners series, we explore the standard features and specs of hybrids and highlight 10 top hybrid caravans.
One step up in size from teardrops, hybrids are still relatively small, hard-walled caravans with an external kitchen and some internal floor space. Many hybrids even offer an internal kitchen, ensuite and extensive off-grid power and water capacity. Hybrids are generally more expensive, bigger and heavier than teardrops, but are often small enough to store under a carport and tow on narrow tracks. Many are light enough to not require a large 4WD to tow them with.
Some hybrids highlighted here come with everything (including two kitchen sinks!), but for those lacking features, you can usually find them on an extensive options list.

AOR Odyssey Signature S3
The AOR Odyssey Signature S3 is a premium off-grid, off-road lightweight hybrid, with a modular cabin and neat drop-down rear room for showering or to set up additional bedding at camp. The exterior has beefy side-edge framing and an angled rear body for tight, undulating off-roading. There are also two external storage compartments and a three-metre wind-out awning. A three-burner stove and stainless-steel sink feature on the external slide-out kitchen, while the two-berth queen bed cabin converts to a cafe dinette, with external pop-out shower and toilet. The Exodus 12 is the smallest hybrid in the four-model Exodus range, with this off-grid, off-road 12-foot caravan offering a front-hinged pop-top roof, queen-size bed, full external slide-out kitchen and an external-access rear ensuite shower pod. There is plenty of internal and external storage, a bed that can be converted to a U-shape dinette for seating on wet days or dining away from mozzies, and the option of an internal shower/toilet.

Cub H16
From one of Australia’s oldest RV brands comes the Cub H16, now the most popular model in Cub’s hybrid range. This is a relatively large, premium pop-top hybrid caravan. With off-road suspension and off-grid power and water capacity, the H16 also has plenty of luxury features. You get a powered pop-top, king-size bed, cafe dinette, large internal shower/toilet (and an external shower as well) and a diesel hot water and heating system. There’s also an external slide-out kitchen as well as internal kitchenette with stainless sink and fridge.

There is also plenty of off-grid power and water provision as well as lots of storage. The DN5 also offers the the off-road ability expected in the hybrid class, enhanced by its compactness and relatively light weight.

Offline Campers Solitaire 14 Hybrid
The Solitaire 14 Hybrid is the opening salvo in the Offline Campers hybrid range, which also includes the Solitaire 16 Hybrid. With features such as diesel heating and hot water, sirocco fans, pressurised interior, cabin filter, internal and external kitchens, queen-size bed and 2500L-plus of storage, the Solitaire 14 is a premium but relatively lightweight and compact hybrid. Wallaroo Hybrid Series
The Wallaroo Hybrid Series is one of the larger premium pop-top hybrids that nudges close to off-road caravan specs in terms of amenity, size and weight. There are also some cool features such as the large front hatch that gives a great view out at camp, as well as a covered cooking/seating fold-down platform on the A-frame. With a queen-size bed (plus upper sleeping quarters for young kids, if you select the family layout), fully equipped indoor and outdoor kitchens and a high-grade power system and loads of water, the Wallaroo is certainly built for longer-term off-grid camping.
