
Hybrid caravans are one of the fastest growing segments in the RV market. Buyers are attracted to the compact, go-anywhere capacity most hybrids offer. In this second article in our Caravans for Beginners series, we explore the standard features and specs of hybrids and highlight 10 top hybrid caravans.
One step up in size from teardrops, hybrids are still relatively small, hard-walled caravans with an external kitchen and some internal floor space. Many hybrids even offer an internal kitchen, ensuite and extensive off-grid power and water capacity. Hybrids are generally more expensive, bigger and heavier than teardrops, but are often small enough to store under a carport and tow on narrow tracks. Many are light enough to not require a large 4WD to tow them with.
Some hybrids highlighted here come with everything (including two kitchen sinks!), but for those lacking features, you can usually find them on an extensive options list.

AOR Odyssey Signature S3
The AOR Odyssey Signature S3 is a premium off-grid, off-road lightweight hybrid, with a modular cabin and neat drop-down rear room for showering or to set up additional bedding at camp. There is plenty of internal and external storage, a bed that can be converted to a U-shape dinette for seating on wet days or dining away from mozzies, and the option of an internal shower/toilet.

Cub H16
From one of Australia’s oldest RV brands comes the Cub H16, now the most popular model in Cub’s hybrid range. This is a relatively large, premium pop-top hybrid caravan. You get a powered pop-top, king-size bed, cafe dinette, large internal shower/toilet (and an external shower as well) and a diesel hot water and heating system. The Solitaire 14 Hybrid is the opening salvo in the Offline Campers hybrid range, which also includes the Solitaire 16 Hybrid. The Wallaroo Hybrid Series is one of the larger premium pop-top hybrids that nudges close to off-road caravan specs in terms of amenity, size and weight. There are also some cool features such as the large front hatch that gives a great view out at camp, as well as a covered cooking/seating fold-down platform on the A-frame.
