Is your off-road caravan actually covered off-road? The pre-trip Insurance checklist

Is your off-road caravan actually insured off-road? 5 key things to check in your caravan insurance before heading off-grid.

It’s the great Aussie dream. You, your family, and a toughened-up off-road caravan hitting the red dirt tracks of the Outback or finding that perfect, secluded campsite down a sandy coastal track. You’ve spent tens of thousands upgrading your suspension, fitting all-terrain tyres, and making sure your rig is ready to roll.

But as the holidays approach and thousands of us prepare to hitch up, there is a question you need to ask yourself: Is your insurance policy as “off-road ready” as your caravan?

Have you ever taken a proper look at the terms and conditions of your caravan insurance policy? It’s easy to assume that mentions of “off-road” mean you’re covered wherever the track takes you, but the details can sometimes tell a different story. If it’s been a while since you checked your PDS (Product Disclosure Statement), you might be surprised to learn there are situations that could leave you thousands of dollars out of pocket the moment you leave the bitumen.

Here is what you need to check before you head off.

The “gazetted road” trap

This is the big one. ‘Gazetted roads’ are roads that appear on a government map and are legally recognised and maintained. They are not the same as dirt roads and while both are covered by Club 4X4 Insurance, you should always double-check where you intend to go with your current insurer

The problem? Some of the best campsites in Australia (the ones you bought an off-road van to reach) are at the end of tracks that might not be gazetted. We’re talking about fire trails, farm tracks to private campsites, or those wiggly lines on HEMA maps that lead to pristine beaches.

If you have an accident on a non-gazetted track, a standard policy might void your claim entirely. It’s the principle of the thing. If you buy a van built for the bush, your insurance should work in the bush.

Hot tip: Look for an insurer like Club 4X4 that explicitly covers you anywhere you are legally allowed to drive. Their policy includes gazetted and non-gazetted roads, 4X4 tracks, beaches, and even private property – as long as you’re legally allowed to be there.

The $10,000 recovery risk

Imagine this. You’ve towed your camper trailer onto a soft beach. The tide is turning, and despite your best efforts with the MaxTrax, you’re bogged to the axles!

If there is a chance you may need a recovery vehicle to drag your heavy van out of a bog, off a rock step, or back up a slippery clay hill, this is something you can add to your cover.

Professional off-road recovery is eye-wateringly expensive. We are talking hundreds of dollars per hour, often with a “flag fall” fee just to leave the depot. A remote recovery from the Simpson Desert or Cape York can easily run into the thousands, with it sometimes exceeding $10,000.

This is where specialist comprehensive insurance shines. Club 4X4 includes up to $1,500 of off-road recovery cover as standard in every policy, with options to upgrade this to $5,000, $15,000 or even $30,000. This flexibility means you can rest easy, whether it’s a weekend trip or a holiday to the tip.

Valuation trap: Market vs agreed value

You’ve bought a caravan for $80,000. You’ve then added a $3,000 lithium battery system, upgraded the suspension for $4,000, and bolted on a new awning and toolbox. Your van is now worth significantly more than a “stock” model.

Club 4X4 allows you to cover modifications as a separate agreed value to the base vehicle, including the labour cost to install them, ensuring you don’t lose the value of that expensive gear you’ve used to make your caravan your own.

The off-road caravan insurance checklist

Before you pack the camp chairs and hit the road, dig out your insurance PDS and ask these five questions:

  1. Am I covered on non-gazetted roads?   If you plan to leave gazetted roads, be sure to check you’re covered for where you want to go by your insurer.
  2. Does my policy cover off-road recovery costs? Not just towing after an accident, but recovery if I’m simply bogged or mechanically stranded off-road.
  3. Are my modifications listed and covered? Ensure your sum insured reflects the current cost to replace your van and all its extras.
  4. What is my personal effects limit? You’d be surprised how quickly the value of iPads, cameras, and fishing gear adds up. Club 4X4 includes $2,000 of personal effects cover as standard.
  5. Is my campsite booking covered? If you have to cancel due to an accident, does your insurer cover the lost deposit? Club 4X4 covers up to $1,000 for unrecoverable campsite fees.
