You’ve all heard about AI (artificial intelligence), right? And no, I’m not talking about anything as sinister as Skynet for the Terminator fans out there. Or as cute as Wall-E for the Disney fans. I’m talking about ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that’s wheedled its way into offices around the globe to help out with mundane tasks. I suspect many students have used it to help write last-minute assignments as well.
But what does AI know about RVing? It’s never gone camping, driven a motorhome, or towed a caravan. Does it even understand what an RV is? And how can AI help us in the future when it comes to RVs? As that ChatGPT was designed to do just that – chat – I went ahead and asked it. Here’s how the typed conversation went.

In conclusion
While the suggestions of things to do were fine, the distances mentioned are incorrect. Sometimes out by as much as 100 kilometres! I also asked it to suggest caravan parks that would allow dogs and while it made five suggestions, three of those suggestions provided links to websites that didn’t lead anywhere. As a result, I was fairly disappointed with ChatGPT’s efforts as a travel planning tool.
I don’t think AI will be replacing a good old ‘drop into the visitor centre’ anytime soon.
While it seems that AI could be useful in the future when it comes to RVs and RV travel, right now, it still has a lot to learn. Well, ChatGPT does at least. However, as the technology improves, this could be a really fascinating space to watch moving forward.
