Here is a classic VW Campervan without the expense and headaches of restoring a VW Kombi. Everything about this van says ‘open road freedom’…

These eclectic vehicles have been created by retro camper van fans Matt and Becky Clay, who reside in England. The design was instigated by the need to travel, but their growing family and dog soon outgrew their 40-year-old campervan.

Wanting to find a way to carry on exploring, while not having to compromise on their accustomed fun factor, they struggled to find anything that would match their expectations of cool design and modern safety standards… so they decided to build something themselves.

With a combination of Matt’s trailer-building experience and Becky’s retro design eye, Matt fashioned the Dub Box by marrying together the rear sections of a ’58 and ’67 model year VW Transporter van in order to create a unique GRP body shell mould and Becky had fun re-creating a classic interior. Voila… they created the Dub Box.

These throwback nods to yesteryear with their stylish, surprisingly spacious and secure builds have arrived upon Aussie soil. Eighteen months ago, Stephen Kennard from Goulburn NSW came across the Dub Box while at the International Caravan Show in Düsseldorf. He brought two vans into Australia with the aim to give them a bit of exposure and create a market for them. These two fully approved, road registered, compliant, iconic models can be viewed at dubboxaustralia.weebly.com

Described as the Retro Camper Caravan, the Dub Box is a two-berth practical caravan that comes with many original and reproduced retro parts such as handles, door catches, window seals, pop-out windows, hinges, bumpers, road lights and number plate lights. Each Dub box is customised to the buyer’s own colour schemes and materials.

The Dub Box definitely is the coolest and most stylish caravan for lovers of all things vintage. Each van is personally designed as you want.

There are a couple of options in the range. There is the Standard Dub Box, which is anything but standard!

Inspired by the ’60s, the Dub Box offers some cutting-edge trailer technology for safe and reliable use. The interior also reflects the marriage between vintage style and fun, and modern-day functionality.

While the fibreglass body shell can be matched to any retro or modern colour scheme of your choice, the range of options for the flooring, upholstery, blinds and laminates (for worktops and cupboards) allows for the interior designer in you to go wildly creative.

The Dub Box comes with everything that you want and need in a compact caravan – with a spacious dining area that easily seats four adults, a huge converted double bed, a custom kitchenette with plenty of storage plus a wicked retro-style fridge, a CD player with MP3 charger and dock, stereo speakers, 240V hook-up, 12V power distribution board, LED lighting, and so much more… to make all your adventures exciting and fun.

The pop-top (optional extra) provides additional height in the kitchenette. Shock absorbers are fitted as standard and alloy wheels and safari windows also feature. A hot-air heating system can also be installed on request.

When you are ready to leave your traditional white caravan behind to hit the roads with a uniquely crafted Dub Box, you can choose between the Standard and Shortie versions.

Is it expensive?

That depends on what you call expensive. Coming in at around $40,000, you are getting a custom-made van, that has not been mass produced, and is a lot cheaper than doing an old van up yourself… maybe not as much fun as renovating on your own, but a lot less dollars spent and no time at all!

Have a look at driving out with a Dub Box and you’ll have a trailer that will likely turn your fellow campers green with envy. The Dub Box design shape encapsulates the very core of cool and chic styling and gives a real individual alternative to the
traditional white caravan ethos.
