On the Move Caravans has launched their new Infinity range, raising the curtain on an affordable series of touring caravans suited to both couples and families. RV Daily was invited behind the scenes to road test the newest models – and even spend the night.

Usually at a caravan launch, you go along, have a look through, take some photos and have a chat with the manufacturer. But not with On The Move. When you are invited to a launch, you have to bring your overnight bag because you will be calling one of the caravans home for a couple of nights!

The Infinity range has six models – three for couples and three family-sized caravans. All are road tourers designed for the blacktop, not off-road, and start at less than $70,000. I spent a lot of time in the Infinity 6.3F, a double-axle caravan with a north-south bed up front and two bunks and a separate toilet and shower at the rear.

First impressions

When I first walked into the van, I saw the bed, lounge and kitchen, and it all looked great and very inviting. Then I looked towards the kids’ area and gasped. Opposite the bunks was a couple of doors that looked like they led to an adjoining penthouse apartment! Behind one was the shower, the other revealed the toilet. The doors serve an important function (how wonderful to have the toilet separate from the shower room) but that didn’t stop them being a striking design feature. Interestingly, the bathroom vanity was on the rear wall adjacent to the bunks, a layout you don’t often see in family caravans.

There are advantages to being in a van for a couple of days – you get to try everything out. How good is the mattress, is there enough room in the ensuite, how comfortable is the banquette seating, and can you sit down without having to breathe in to squeeze around the table? And, if you can sit down easily, does the table stick out so far into the kitchen that you bump into it?

I’m very pleased to report that getting in and out of the seating was easy. So too manoeuvring around the table, thanks to its drop-down side extension that can be folded over when not in use.

I also checked out the Infinity 6.3 couples’ van, which is the same length (6.3m/20ft 7in) and has café seating and a spacious ensuite extending across the whole back of the caravan. I found it very difficult to pull myself away and was really impressed with the finish on this model.

Wow factor

In more than 20 years of caravanning, I have forgotten to turn the lights off a couple of times when I go out. The minute my feet touch the grass, I realise my mistake and have to go back inside and switch everything off. Well, in the Infinity 6.3F all I had to do was go back to the door and press the buttons on the control panel. How easy and good is that?

I also liked the colour scheme; the modern grey and white exterior flowed through to the inside. These muted tones give you so much opportunity to personalise your van with your own pops of colour. I was immediately visualising some red here and there, and maybe blue linen on the bed.

The Infinity 6.3 for couples.

As we are not all the same height, the van has some neat features to help those who are tall. There’s padding on the door to protect your head when you duck in and out. The queen bed has a memory foam mattress and is extendable, so you can stretch out and sleep in comfort.

The build

I focus on what is inside the van, that’s my area of expertise, but the outside is equally impressive. Part of the Tourer OTM range, the Infinity series – while not off-roaders – are built strong and have all the essentials you need for driving on the bitumen. The 6in galvanised box tube chassis has Torsion suspension with shocks, 10in electric brakes and 500mm black high-strength body jacketing for robust external protection.

The caravan is full-composite construction, made with a single-piece timberless roof that incorporates the front and rear walls for seamless leak resistance. The side walls are also single piece and the caravan has a one-piece honeycomb floor.

There’s excellent storage for your gas cylinders in a lockable side-access toolbox on the A-frame, and a full-length tunnel boot for stowing your camping gear.

Inside, you’ll find all the mod cons, including a 185L compressor fridge, gas/electric cooktop, microwave, TV, washing machine and cassette toilet. There’s modest provision for off-grid camping, with one 95L water tank, two 100W solar panels on the roof and a 120Ah AGM battery.

The road test

Part of my review included the all-important test drive. The plan was to drive up into the Gold Coast hinterland to tackle some winding roads and tricky terrain and find out how the van handles on the road. I was a front-seat passenger when we took out the Infinity 7.2 couples’ caravan, the largest in the Infinity range at 23ft 6in, and with a rear club lounge. The van behaved perfectly, with no problems going up or down hill and corners were a breeze. Simply put, the van towed so well, you had to look in the mirrors to remind yourself it was there.

The Infinity range has everything you need for easy caravan park life. And after enjoying several meals in the caravan (co-owner Robin Harris is a master of the BBQ), I can attest to the caravan’s comfort and functionality.

The launch was during one of Queensland’s major storm events and we had some inclement weather to contend with. One minute it was fine, the next the rain hit and the ground turned into a paddling pool. Our hosts sprang to action to counter the wet and keep everyone dry. A quick trip back to the factory and within no time at all we had a shelter in place.

Given the OTM team’s reaction speed and quick thinking, I understand how they continue to produce a range of smartly designed and constructed vans – perfect for the modern caravanning couple or family.
